International Water Project PDF Print E-mail

The International Water Project was established with two goals in mind. The first is to supply the necessary funds to repair a drill that was previously shipped to Malawi. The second is to establish one or more fresh water wells in the country of Mozambique.

When I turn on a water faucet I am often reminded of the women who walk staggering distances to find water, which is oftentimes contaminated with pathogens and parasites, and then they hike back to their mud homes with 50-60 lbs of water on their heads. While in Mozambique I saw hundreds of women gathering water out of a filthy river, brown in color, and that was the water they were bringing home to their children to drink and to cook with. That was their only option. The average lifespan of a Mozambican is 37 years old. The two main causes of death are water borne diseases and Aids.

Shelter Box USA PDF Print E-mail

Shelter Box USA has become Rotary's first-line response to disasters around the world.  Each Shelter Box holds a tent, sleeping bags or blankets, cooking equipment, water carriers and purification tablets, and tools; enough to sustain up to 10 persons for six months or more, following a major disaster.

Since its inception in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall, England, Shelter Box has helped over 500,000 disaster survivors around the world.  Shelter Boxes have been taken to victims of disasters such as Indian Ocean tsunami, the Myanmar cyclone, the central China earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, and many others.

Shelter Box also supports "A Million in Africa," an ongoing effort to provide boxes for refugees in Africa; many persons have been forced into a nomadic existence on the continent, due to war, disease, famine, drought and natural disasters.

Each fully-equipped Shelter Box costs $1,000; they are assembled and distributed by volunteers in Helston-Lizard, and shipped out where needed.  And dozens of specially-trained volunteers are organized into Shelterbox Response Teams (SRTs), to help shepherd the boxes to their destinations.

The Sycamore Rotary Club supports Shelter Box on an annual basis, and other Rotary Clubs in District 6420 are doing the same.  For complete information, go to the Shelter Box USA website at www.shelterboxusa.org
