Brian Adams from the Rotary Club of Sycamore has been selected as the District 6420 Rotarian of the Year; the announcement was made, and award presented, during ceremonies on May 1st at the District Conference, held at the Clock Tower Resort in Rockford.
Adams was cited for his District-wide work on Shelter Box, a Global Rotary Club Project dedicated to disaster relief. Shelter Box provides emergency shelter and supplies to survivors of disasters around the world; each Box contains enough equipment to support ten persons for at least six months following a major disaster. Adams has represented Shelter Box USA in northern Illinois since July of 2006.
"Brian Adams has tirelessly...traveled all over District 6420 promoting the Shelter Box program," said Kent Terry of the Marseilles Rotary Club, in making the presentation. "Shelter Box is a good project, but to be honest most of us didn't realize how good until the devastating earthquakes hit both Haiti and Chile," Terry said.
Since the Haiti earthquake in January 2010, over $40,000 has been raised from Rotary Clubs, individuals and organizations for Shelter Boxes in Haiti, Chile and elsewhere. Over 15,000 Shelter Boxes have been sent to Haiti since January -- enough to house 150,000 people. |

Rotary Service Week Wrap-Up |
|

|
Dozens of Sycamore Rotary Club members took time out of busy careers and full schedules…to further the Club’s ongoing mission to serve the public.
The Rotary Club’s first-ever Rotary Service Week actually covered a two-week period, from March 24th through April 7th. During that time, Rotarians devoted themselves to a variety of public service projects; chief among them was an effort on behalf of DeKalb County Hospice, to deliver Easter gift bags to hospice clients around the area.
The March 31st meeting at the Carls Fargo saw members assemble bags with small gifts, treats and a card for each recipient; several members delivered them to area hospitals, nursing homes and private residences.
Beyond that, many members took part in individual efforts, such as:
-- A “Make Your Own Pizza” party with several children, with proceeds going to the Sycamore Pay it Forward House
-- A presentation on National Poetry Month to the Ak-tion Club of Sycamore, which is comprised of developmentally disabled members; they learned about the craft of writing and enjoying poetry, and got the opportunity to compose one of their own
-- Visits and conversations with out-of-town nursing home residents
-- Volunteering an hour or so of time with organizations ranging from Goodwill, to St. Mary’s Church in Sycamore, to the Pay it Forward House |
